A late-night robbery attempt in Manhattan’s Fort Washington Park resulted in the shooting of an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in the face and forearm. One suspect opened fire as two people on a moped approached the 42-year-old agent who was enjoying the park with a buddy. The agent’s arm and face were hit by the gunshot.
Despite his injuries, the agent fired again, striking the attacker, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, 21, who subsequently self-presented with a gunshot wound at a hospital in the Bronx. The second suspect has not been apprehended.
Before being released under the current administration, Mora only undertook a deportation vetting process via Zoom, despite having entered the country illegally in April 2023, according to federal officials. He was arrested for assault, robbery, and domestic abuse, according to the records, and he had an active Massachusetts kidnapping warrant, but he was still at large.
After receiving treatment at Harlem Hospital, the injured officer’s condition is now stable. During their visit, CBP leadership, Mayor Adams, and Police Commissioner Tisch commended his courage. While investigating potential weaknesses in bond and immigration enforcement procedures, investigators are attempting to capture the second suspect.
