A 74-year-old man in New South Wales has been arrested after discovering over AUD 40,000 (about USD 26,000) in a designer handbag abandoned on a suburban train. Instead of reporting the find, he transferred the money into his own bag and disembarked at Glenfield station.
Authorities were notified by the bag’s rightful owner, who alerted police after realizing the cash was missing. Swift investigation led officers to the suspect’s home in Rossmore, where approximately AUD 24,000 was recovered the next day. The remaining funds were reportedly spent at local pubs and partially deposited into the man’s bank account.
Charged with larceny, handling proceeds of crime, and disposing of stolen property, he appeared in Campbelltown Local Court. Rather than incarceration, the 74-year-old received a nine-month community corrections order and was ordered to repay the amount taken.
During proceedings, he said a former police friend had advised not reporting the find and to seek legal counsel instead—but he did neither. Officials emphasized that despite his age, his decision to conceal and spend the cash led to formal charges.
