Flint, Michigan city councilman Leon El‑Alamin, a former drug dealer whose record was wiped under the state’s Clean Slate Act, was arrested on July 10 and now faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges tied to alleged domestic violence.
El-Alamin, 44, is accused of choking a woman, dragging her by the hair, and striking her face after allegedly becoming enraged when she checked her email. The victim reportedly locked herself in a bathroom and called 911, after which officers found physical evidence—including bruises, a neck mark, and strands of hair—consistent with her account. Investigators also discovered an unregistered firearm inside the residence.
El-Alamin, once known as Leon Wilson, served a prison sentence of over a decade before becoming an advocate for criminal justice reform. His past was erased under a law supported by Michigan’s Democratic leadership, enabling him to enter public office. He converted to Islam while incarcerated and founded a nonprofit aimed at helping formerly incarcerated youth.
Despite his background in civic activism, he has denied the assault allegations and stated he plans to clear his name in court. His bond has been set at $7,500, and he has already appeared for an initial hearing.
