Queens Assemblyman and mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani has reaffirmed his intent to disband the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG)—a high-profile tactical unit that played a critical role in responding to last week’s deadly Midtown Manhattan mass shooting.
The SRG, known for leading rapid-response interventions during violent incidents and large-scale unrest, arrived first on the scene of the Park Avenue rooftop massacre that claimed four lives, including that of Officer Didarul Islam.
Mamdani, who previously called on social media to “dismantle” the unit over allegations of protest-related misconduct and costly settlements, now faces backlash for targeting the very team that became essential in the crisis response effort.
