After more than 13 years of marriage, Ashley Biden, the former first daughter, has formally filed for divorce from Dr. Howard Krein. The Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas received the filing on August 11, 2025.
In an interfaith ceremony held at St. Joseph on the Brandywine church in Delaware in June 2012, Ashley, 44, and Howard, 58, were joined in marriage. In 2010, Beau Biden, Ashley’s late brother, introduced them bringing them together.
Ashley posted a number of Instagram Stories that expressed a sense of confidence and rejuvenation on the same day the filing was made. In one, she was seen giving the thumbs up while strolling through a park while Beyoncé’s “Freedom” played. Lauryn Hill’s “Freedom Time” was featured alongside a remark on new beginnings in another post, suggesting a metaphorical fresh start.
Although the pair did not have children, Krein’s career as a plastic surgeon and medical executive, as well as Ashley’s prominent family connections, occasionally brought attention to their marriage. The divorce processes are still confidential, and no formal explanation for the split has been made public.
Ashley Biden is going through a major personal transition with this, marking the start of a new chapter outside of her long-term marriage.
