Despite Slumping Approval, Socialist Mamdani Remains Top Pick in NYC Race

Despite a growing number of New Yorkers expressing reservations about Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, a new Gotham Polling & Analytics survey confirms he remains the frontrunner in the 2025 mayoral race.

The poll of 1,400 likely voters reveals that 47% hold an unfavorable view of Mamdani—up sharply from earlier surveys where his negatives hovered in the low to mid-40s. However, this shift hasn’t dented his momentum: he still leads the pack with 42% support in the general election field.

    Trailing him are:

    • Andrew Cuomo at 23%
    • Republican Curtis Sliwa at 16%
    • Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams at 9%

The survey, conducted on August 11, underscores Mamdani’s commanding position, even in hypothetical matchups where voters are asked to pick a different candidate if their top choice were no longer in the race—Mamdani consistently pulls more than 40% in every scenario.

Still, cracks are emerging in his support among establishment Democrats. Governor Kathy Hochul, among others, has publicly resisted endorsing him, citing disagreements with his tax and grocery-store proposals. Without backing from heavyweights like Hochul, Schumer, and Jeffries, Mamdani’s path may rest either on holding steady at the 40% level or persuading swing voters to bridge that gap.
