On MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson declined to commit when asked whether increasing the number of uniformed officers would directly improve safety in the city. Host Joe Scarborough pressed for a clear “yes” or “no”—but Johnson redirected, emphasizing that public safety depends on a holistic strategy.

Johnson spotlighted the importance of vital social supports—like affordable housing, mental health services, and youth employment—stressing that they should work in tandem with law enforcement rather than relying on higher police numbers alone.

This exchange comes as the Trump administration considers deploying federal authorities to Chicago, a plan Johnson has strongly opposed, calling it an unnecessary overreach.
