Apple’s forthcoming iOS 26 release is unnerving Republican operatives who rely on mass texting to communicate with supporters. The update introduces a feature that automatically redirects texts from unknown senders—numbers not already saved in a user’s contacts—into a separate folder, where they won’t trigger notifications.
This poses a direct threat to GOP campaigns, which use text messaging extensively for voter outreach, fundraising appeals, and get-out-the-vote prompts. The National Republican Senatorial Committee warned this change could cost them over $25 million—and estimates suggest the total loss across Republican campaigns may surpass $500 million.
Beyond fundraising, the update also jeopardizes high-quality polling efforts, as legitimate survey texts from reputable organizations may go unnoticed, potentially eroding public research capabilities and civic engagement.
