The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is experiencing a leadership crisis after Director Susan Monarez was abruptly fired less than a month into her position. Senate-confirmed scientist Monarez was fired because she refused to retire or fire senior staff members in response to pressure from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Her lawyers believe that only the president has the power to fire her, arguing that she was neither formally fired nor resigned.
Four senior CDC officials resigned in solidarity:
-Director of Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Demetre Daskalakis
-Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry
-Director of Emerging Diseases Daniel Jernigan
-Head of Health Data & Surveillance, Jennifer Layden
Each mentioned worries about the next administration’s potential to undermine scientific integrity, spread false information, and meddle in politics.
Public health experts are alarmed by the shake-up, which coincides with extensive changes at the agency, such as revisions to vaccine policy, reorganizations of independent advisory committees, and budget cuts. In an effort to bring stability back, Jim O’Neill has been named acting CDC director by the Department of Health and Human Services.
