Trump Announces Plan to Require Voter ID Through Executive Order

President Trump announced plans to issue an executive order requiring voter identification for all U.S. elections, declaring “NO EXCEPTIONS!” in a post on Truth Social. He also outlined sweeping changes to voting methods: eliminating mail-in ballots—except for those who are seriously ill or serving overseas in the military—and mandating the use of paper ballots only.

Legal experts caution this move will likely face lawsuits, as the U.S. Constitution assigns election regulation primarily to states and Congress, not the presidency. Presidential attempts to unilaterally change voting rules have already been struck down in courts earlier this year.

Trump’s executive order push reflects a broader effort to reshape electoral procedures ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
