New York’s mayoral campaign stage now features unexpected global influence: it has emerged that filmmaker Mira Nair, mother of candidate Zohran Mamdani, received extensive funding from Qatari cultural institutions for her creative projects over more than a decade.
Since 2009, Qatar’s Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani—who oversees the nation’s flagship film and arts initiatives—has supported Nair’s films and theatrical works. Her backing extended to inviting Nair to participate in Qatar’s cultural events during the 2022 World Cup.
Controversy ignited when the sheikha began publicly promoting Mamdani’s mayoral candidacy on social media, sharing favorable poll results and reacting enthusiastically to images of him with his mother. Political analysts warn that such cultural funding intertwined with campaign advocacy raises potential concerns about foreign influence.
Mamdani’s campaign has denied receiving any direct support from Qatari entities and emphasized that his values align with universal human rights—not any regime’s agenda.
