A moment of joy at the US Open quickly turned tense when a man was caught on camera seizing a signed cap from a young fan just as the player, Kamil Majchrzak, appeared to be handing it to him. The unexpected act left the child visibly upset and drew widespread attention.

The man was later identified as Piotr Szczerek, a wealthy businessman from Poland. Outing followed widespread online sleuthing that linked him to the viral footage, leading to intense public backlash and scrutiny of his actions.

In response to the uproar, Majchrzak took matters into his own hands—locating the child and presenting him with a replacement hat, along with autographs and a warm gesture of reconciliation. Szczerek also issued an apology, describing his behavior as a regrettable mistake made in the heat of the moment. He explained that he believed the hat was meant for his own sons and expressed remorse for causing hurt.
