A tightknit Alabama college town is in shock after the brutal slaying of Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, a beloved retired veterinary medicine professor from Auburn University.

On the morning of September 6, Schnuelle, 59, was ambushed while walking her dog in Kiesel Park. Deputies discovered her body in a wooded area suffering multiple stab wounds. The attack occurred along a scenic park trail known for its popularity among local dog walkers and joggers.

Evidence indicates the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Harold Rashad Dabney III, attacked Schnuelle in an apparent robbery attempt. He then drove off with her red Ford F-150, which was later recovered nearby. Schnuelle’s dog was found unharmed beside her body.

Authorities apprehended Dabney the following day and charged him with capital murder on counts involving both kidnapping and robbery. He remains held without bond, and prosecutors have signaled an intent to pursue the death penalty.

The Auburn community is mourning the loss of Schnuelle, a former professor admired for her compassion, expertise, and decades of commitment to veterinary science.
