A shocking stabbing on Charlotte’s light rail has left commuters shaken and placed the city’s transit safety under intense scrutiny.

The attack claimed the life of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, who was sitting on the Lynx Blue Line when 34-year-old repeat offender Decarlos Brown Jr. suddenly pulled a knife and fatally stabbed her in the neck. The assault, captured on surveillance video, ended only when Brown exited the train at the next station, where police quickly arrested him.

Brown, who has a long criminal history and documented mental health issues, now faces a federal charge for causing death on a mass transit system—an offense that could bring life imprisonment or the death penalty.

In the aftermath, multiple investigations were launched into the Charlotte Area Transit System’s security failures. City officials announced immediate measures, including redeploying personnel, expanding surveillance, and hiring additional guards. Federal authorities are also reviewing transit safety protocols.

The killing has ignited widespread outrage, with community members demanding accountability and stronger protections for commuters across the city.
