On a recent episode of CBS Mornings, host Nate Burleson asked former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy whether the Republican Party should examine its rhetoric in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s killing.

Burleson pointed out that some of Kirk’s public statements had offended specific communities, and asked McCarthy if this tragedy could serve as a moment of reflection on how political leaders’ words might fuel broader tensions.

In response, McCarthy said the issue of political violence isn’t unique to one party but is a national problem. He cited other recent violent events — like the Minnesota school shooting and last year’s attempt on President Trump — as part of a larger pattern that all of America needs to confront.

McCarthy framed the discussion as one not about partisan blame but about shared responsibility, urging the nation to consider who it wants to be and how to move forward together.
