Stephen King sparked outrage by claiming Charlie Kirk had “advocated stoning gays to death” in a social media post after Kirk’s assassination. Widely criticized for spreading misinformation, King soon deleted the post and issued an apology.
In his response, King said he had misinterpreted Kirk’s past comments about biblical passages and admitted he had not verified the claim. He also shared that he regretted the error because of the personal attacks it triggered.
Some conservatives, including Sen. Ted Cruz and commentator Dave Rubin, harshly condemned King’s original statement, calling it a lie and unfair. After apologizing, King also condemned the assassination itself, likening it to other high-profile political killings.
