Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, has been identified as the gunman behind the bloody attack at a Latter-day Saints church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.
According to authorities, Sanford drove a pickup truck into the church during Sunday service, then emerged and opened fire on congregants before setting the building ablaze. At least four people were killed, and eight others were wounded in the assault.
Sanford was fatally shot in a confrontation with law enforcement at the scene. Investigators found evidence suggesting the fire was deliberate, and the blaze fully engulfed portions of the structure.
Police say Sanford acted alone. Motive remains unknown, and authorities continue to search his residence and await further forensic results.
