Vance Predicts Shutdown After Failed White House Meeting

Vice President JD Vance warned Monday that the U.S. government is “headed into a shutdown” after a White House session with President Trump and congressional leaders ended without agreement. He blamed Democratic lawmakers for obstructing a deal, saying they “won’t do the right thing.”

Democratic leaders, including Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, responded that major policy disagreements—particularly over health care and funding—remained unresolved. The deadline to pass a stopgap funding bill is 11:59 p.m. Tuesday; if it passes, nonessential federal services would be suspended until a new budget is approved.

Republicans have pressed for a clean continuing resolution to extend current spending levels through Nov. 21 without added policy changes. Democrats counter that key elements, such as extending health insurance subsidies and protecting Medicaid funding, must be part of any agreement.

Administration officials have begun preparing for possible furloughs, while both parties brace for the political fallout if a shutdown occurs.
