Thomas Jacob Sanford, age 40 and a former U.S. Marine, has been named as the suspect in Sunday’s shooting and arson attack at a Latter-day Saints church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.
Sanford is believed to have driven a pickup—adorned with American flags—into the church during services. Investigators say he then opened fire on worshippers and set fire to the building. At least four people were killed, and eight others were wounded.
Law enforcement confronted and fatally shot Sanford at the scene. Investigators report that he acted alone, and they discovered evidence suggesting the blaze was deliberately initiated. The FBI and local agencies continue probing his background for motive and possible warning signs.
