The Trump administration is reportedly preparing sweeping changes to disability benefit rules that could make it harder for older Americans to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
Under the proposed framework, age would no longer be a factor in determining eligibility—shifting assessments toward stricter evaluations of ability to perform alternative work. Critics warn that if adopted, the changes could strip hundreds of thousands of recipients of benefits over time.
Meanwhile, the Social Security Administration is also planning to overhaul its occupational database used in disability claims, updating outdated jobs and reclassifying tasks—adjustments that could further eliminate claimants from eligibility under the new criteria.
The proposals come amid broader Social Security reforms under this administration aimed at reducing spending and tightening standards across federal benefit programs.
