Trump Claims He Warned of Bin Laden Before 9/11—Says ‘Take Credit’

President Trump rekindled controversy with his long-standing assertion that he foresaw Osama bin Laden’s ascent before the September 11 attacks, claiming that American officials at the time disregarded his warning.

Using his 2000 book The America We Deserve as support, Trump claimed at a Navy event that he had identified bin Laden as a possible threat over a year prior to the attacks that claimed the lives of almost 3,000 Americans. “I told you to watch Osama bin Laden,” Trump stated to the audience. “No one else will give it to me, so we have to take a little credit.”

The former president criticized previous governments for not taking action on similar issues and claimed that his comment was an indication of foresight. He pointed out that his reference to bin Laden in the book was part of a larger attack on American foreign policy and intelligence readiness in the late 1990s.

Despite the fact that Trump’s remarks have been around for years, fact-checkers have noted that his book reference was brief and did not specifically foretell the 9/11 attacks. The former president insisted, however, that his early warning showed a better grasp of international terrorism than the then-political elite.

The comments coincide with a resurgence of national security discourse, with Trump highlighting his track record of making border security and counterterrorism top priorities while in office. He also connected his administration’s eventual achievements in removing prominent terrorist leaders and enhancing military preparedness to his early worries about terrorism.

Although bin Laden was already on intelligence watch lists in the late 1990s, Trump’s book was more a reflection of his broad awareness than a specific warning, according to critics who saw the comments as an attempt to rewrite history.

However, as he tries to emphasize his alleged instinct for security and foresight in international affairs, Trump’s statement illustrates his continuous attempt to portray himself as a leader who spotted risks that others missed—reviving a narrative that still resonates with his fans.
