Newly surfaced court documents indicate that Attorney General Letitia James’s grandniece, Nakia Thompson, who has lived in a Virginia home owned by James since 2020, was arrested on two previous occasions for assaulting law enforcement officers. Thompson is also listed as a fugitive, having absconded from probation in North Carolina.
Thompson, 36, has a long criminal record spanning both Virginia and North Carolina. Charges include burglary, grand larceny, possession of burglary tools, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and numerous traffic violations. She was sentenced in 2011 to probation for assaulting a public official and resisting an officer.
At the time of James’s 2020 home purchase in Norfolk, she declared the property would be used as a secondary residence. Prosecutors now allege that Thompson has occupied the home rent-free with her children ever since — a claim that contradicts the mortgage terms, which prohibit shared use or renting.
James has denied any wrongdoing and insists the accusations are politically motivated. The revelations about Thompson’s past arrests add a new dimension to an already controversial case.
