Senator Mitch McConnell — now 83 years old — was captured on video stumbling and falling to the floor inside a Senate office building today as he headed to cast votes. The incident occurred in the Russell Senate Office Building, shortly after McConnell was approached by an activist who asked about his stance on ICE.
In the footage, McConnell appears unsteady, reaches for an aide’s arm, then loses balance and goes down. He was quickly assisted by staff and a Capitol Police officer, after which he steadied himself, waved at bystanders, and proceeded to the Senate chamber. His spokesperson later confirmed he was uninjured and went on to vote.
This is not the first time McConnell has suffered a fall or shown signs of physical frailty in recent years. Past incidents include a major fall in 2023 that resulted in concussion and a fractured rib, as well as freezing episodes captured on camera. McConnell has cited ongoing effects of childhood polio and a limp in public statements.
Earlier this year, McConnell announced he would not run for reelection in 2026 but would complete his current Senate term. The fall today comes amid heightened attention to the health of senior lawmakers and the demands of serving in rigorous legislative roles.
