At Illinois State University, a graduate student and teaching assistant has been charged after allegedly overturning a display table set up by the campus chapter of Turning Point USA (TPUSA).

The incident was recorded on video and circulated online, showing the 27-year-old accused telling nearby individuals, “Jesus did it, so I gotta do it,” before flipping the table and scattering pamphlets and pins. The booth was promoting an upcoming event organized by the student group.

Following a campus police investigation, the teaching assistant was arrested and booked on counts of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. The university’s police department said they are committed to protecting students’ First Amendment rights while also investigating the act of vandalism.

The episode has reignited debate on campus about the boundaries of protest, political expression, and property rights in educational settings. Students and faculty are now calling for greater clarity on how the institution handles incidents of political disruption, as well as potential revisions to conduct and free-speech policies.
