Illinois State University has terminated the teaching assistant position of graduate student Derek Lopez following a video showing him overturning a display table belonging to Turning Point USA and tearing down flyers on campus.
The incident occurred on the university quad, where the student chapter of Turning Point USA was promoting a forthcoming event. In the footage, Lopez is seen telling a bystander, “Well, you know, Jesus did it, so you know I’ve got to do it, right?” before flipping the table and dismissively waving as he departed.
University officials confirmed that while personnel matters remain confidential, Lopez has been relieved of his duties pending further inquiry. The local campus police confirmed his arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property following the incident.
A statement from the university emphasized its commitment to First Amendment protection and encouraged students to engage with opposing views respectfully. Police echoed that message, stating their intention to safeguard both speech rights and campus safety.
