Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told members of Congress that she does not recall any instance of President Joe Biden freezing, appearing lost, or looking confused in public, even as lawmakers cited multiple widely circulated videos showing such moments. Her statements came during a closed-door transcribed interview before the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating the president’s fitness for office and the handling of his public image during his administration.
Jean-Pierre, who served as press secretary before stepping down earlier this year, was questioned about whether she had ever seen footage that appeared to show Biden struggling to move or react during public appearances, including the June 2024 presidential debate. In her sworn testimony, she said she had no recollection of such incidents and maintained that many of the videos shared online had been selectively edited or misrepresented.
When pressed further, Jean-Pierre suggested that during the debate in question, Biden may have been “unwell” rather than mentally confused, describing his condition as “a moment of fatigue” rather than cognitive decline. She defended the administration’s transparency at the time, claiming that the president’s schedule and public appearances were carefully managed based on medical guidance and security protocols.
Members of the committee, however, expressed skepticism. Lawmakers pointed to specific moments where the president appeared to freeze during public ceremonies, including a Medal of Honor presentation and international summits, asking whether staff had intervened or provided assistance in those moments. Jean-Pierre repeatedly responded that she could not recall specific details, emphasizing that “the president was always in control and fully engaged.”
Her testimony is part of a broader House inquiry examining how White House officials communicated about the president’s health and cognitive performance. The investigation seeks to determine whether aides or senior advisors deliberately downplayed concerns raised internally about his physical or mental state.
Republican members of the panel argued that the White House misled the public, while Democrats accused the committee of politicizing routine age-related issues. Jean-Pierre, for her part, reaffirmed her belief that Biden remained “mentally sharp and capable,” citing his work ethic and command of policy discussions during her time in the administration.
The hearing transcript, which is expected to be released in full later this month, could provide new insight into how senior communications officials managed one of the most sensitive topics of Biden’s presidency—his public demeanor and fitness to serve amid growing political pressure and widespread scrutiny.
