Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer once again voted against a short-term funding measure, marking the 14th time Senate Democrats have rejected a Republican-draft spending resolution—and bringing the current federal shutdown closer to setting a historic duration.
The measure, spearheaded by Senate Republicans, aimed to keep government operations funded at current levels while extended negotiations took place. However, Democrats opposed it, citing insufficient protections for healthcare subsidies and other priorities. Schumer said Democrats would not reopen the government unless their key demands were addressed.
With no agreement in sight, the shutdown is on track to eclipse the previous record and has already disrupted federal agencies, jeopardized benefit payments and left hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay. Urgent behind-the-scenes talks continue, but as of now, the stalemate remains unbroken and the risk to public services escalates.
