Senator Bernie Sanders interrupted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s post-election press conference to sharply critique Democratic Party leadership for failing to support progressive candidates in recent races. Sanders directly cited the party’s lack of backing for New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and Maine Senate hopeful Graham Platner.

Sanders told reporters that Democratic leaders had prioritized preserving the status quo over addressing systemic inequalities. He argued that the party must pivot away from defending existing power structures and instead align with working-class voters and grassroots movements.

The intervention took place as Schumer addressed the government shutdown, emphasizing Democrats’ efforts to prevent deeper cuts. Sanders’ remarks signal rising tension within the party over strategy and direction heading into the 2026 election cycle.
