A significant faction of House Republicans has endorsed a short‐term federal funding proposal aimed at reopening shuttered government operations, signaling a shift toward ending the current shutdown. The proposal calls for funding to continue into January 2026 and is backed by the Republican Study Committee.
The same group, however, explicitly opposed renewing expanded health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), labeling the COVID-era program measures as fiscal waste and potential avenues for fraud.
Supporters argue that keeping the government physically open is paramount and must precede broad policy negotiations. They insist that awarding new spending or subsidies without reform would repeat prior mistakes.
As negotiations advance, lawmakers face a narrowing window to craft a deal acceptable enough to break the deadlock and restore public services while holding to their stated fiscal priorities.
