Democrats Halt GOP Bill to Pay Federal Workers Amid Shutdown

Senate Democrats used procedural control to block a Republican-authored short-term funding bill that would have guaranteed paychecks for federal and military workers during the ongoing government shutdown.

The measure, drafted by Senate Republicans, included a provision to ensure back pay for all furloughed federal employees and activated service members, but Democrats argued the spending authority must be tied to broader policy reforms before reopening government operations.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that his party could not support stand-alone “work-around” legislation and insisted any funding resolution must address program extensions such as healthcare subsidies and veterans’ benefits.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune responded by labeling the decision a “moral failure,” saying that refusal to protect worker pay undermines public faith in Congress. The failure to move the legislation leaves key federal functions dormant and hundreds of thousands of government employees still on unpaid leave.
