Thune Warns Senate Will Stay in Limbo While Shutdown Drags On

Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized that the upper chamber remains trapped in procedural limbo as the federal government shutdown continues into its fifth week.

Thune told GOP senators that their current strategy of relying on short-term funding bills and waiting for larger negotiations has not produced results. He said the Senate may need to implement “interim fixes” or dust off an extended funding resolution lasting into next year if the impasse persists.

Republican leadership is now evaluating possible shifts—either reopening the government quickly and addressing policy items later, or holding firm until key reforms are secured. Thune’s remarks reflect frustration on the Hill that the shutdown is drifting into a broader political strategy rather than a near-term fiscal crisis.
