Trump Demands BBC Retract and Apologize — Threatens $1 B Lawsuit

President Donald Trump has issued a formal demand to the British Broadcasting Corporation, insisting the network retract a documentary he says falsely depicted his January 6, 2021 remarks, and issue a public apology within days or face a civil lawsuit valued at a minimum of $1 billion.

The dispute centres on a BBC-aired programme that his legal team alleges spliced together separate segments of his speech to make it appear he encouraged the Capitol riot. Two senior BBC executives have already resigned amid the fallout, and the broadcaster is now reviewing the president’s letter while preparing its response.

Trump’s team argues the documentary caused reputational and financial damage by airing “false, defamatory, disparaging and inflammatory” statements. The ultimatum sets a deadline of Friday for the BBC’s full compliance, with legal action pending should the broadcaster fail to retract and compensate as requested.

This marks the latest escalation in Trump’s longstanding legal and rhetorical campaign against media organisations over alleged editorial bias and misrepresentation in their coverage of his political activities.
