A prominent New York City restaurateur has pulled back on plans to open three new venues in the city following the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor-elect. The owner said he would not sign any more leases in New York, citing concerns over Mamdani’s proposed $30 minimum wage target for 2030, tax-and-spend policies and public safety outlook.

Plans were canceled for major leases on West 32nd Street, the Upper East Side and Upper West Side. The restaurateur indicated that while his existing businesses will remain, further expansions will be pursued in cities believed to be more business-friendly, such as Atlanta and Dallas.

The move underscores mounting business concerns about the incoming mayor’s economic agenda and its potential impact on both rent pressures and operating costs in the hospitality sector.
