In a growing controversy, a senior figure on Zohran Mamdani’s transition team has come under fire after social-media posts resurfaced that reportedly contain antisemitic language and disparage gay rights. The individual in question, identified as Hassaan Chaudhary, has served as a political organizer and was listed as a key member of the transition and inaugural committee.

The posts, some dated back ten years, feature derogatory remarks directed at Jewish people—including use of slurs—and praise for the former Iranian president’s hostile comments toward Israel. In one instance, the individual described gay-rights activism as “purely claptrap” and questioned the legitimacy of boundary lines around those rights.

Chaudhary issued an apology, stating that those statements do not reflect his current views and expressing regret for his past rhetoric. The transition team spokesperson called the remarks “reprehensible” and affirmed they do not represent the mayor-elect or the broader team. However, no disciplinary action has been announced at this time.

Jewish and LGBTQ advocacy groups have condemned the posts as abhorrent and demanded accountability. Some political commentators say the incident raises broader questions about the vetting process and the incoming administration’s judgment in selecting advisers.

As the mayor-elect prepares for his term, the incident serves as an early test of leadership, messaging and priorities related to inclusion and diversity in New York City governance.
