Billionaire GOP donor John Catsimatidis—once a staunch critic of mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani—is now calling on New York City’s conservative leaders to collaborate constructively with the incoming administration.
At a round-table event held at his WABC radio studio, Catsimatidis gathered a group of prominent right-leaning figures, including former NYPD chief John Chell and ex-mayoral candidate Fernando Mateo. While the session was initially billed as the launch of a watchdog coalition to monitor Mamdani, the tone shifted toward one of cooperation and city-wide unity.
During the forum, Catsimatidis emphasized that despite ideological differences, all participants shared a common goal: ensuring New York continues to thrive. “We all love New York,” he stated, urging the conservative bloc to engage rather than isolate. Chell framed the discussion around public safety as a non-negotiable foundation for collaboration.
Business and civic leaders echoed cautious optimism. Kathryn Wylde, head of a major NYC business-group, applauded Mamdani’s focus on housing and childcare affordability, yet raised concerns about the candidate’s proposed tax hikes on wealthy individuals and corporations.
Mamdani, responding to the event, confirmed he has previously spoken with Catsimatidis and signalled willingness to build a broad-based coalition for the sake of municipal progress. A spokesperson for the mayor-elect’s transition team described this outreach as an early sign of bridging divides in the city’s political landscape.
The episode marks a significant pivot for Catsimatidis and raises questions about how New York’s conservative power-base will navigate the era of a socialist incumbent.
