In a recent podcast appearance, Marty Makary — now leading the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — leveled a serious accusation: he insists that long-time public health official Anthony Fauci engineered a “massive cover-up” to hide the true origins of COVID-19.
According to Makary, Fauci played a central role in commissioning a 2020 scientific report that dismissed the theory that the virus leaked from a lab — a theory that Makary argues was earlier supported by several virologists behind closed doors. Makary claims those scientists later reversed their public stance after being pressured and after receiving funding — effectively turning a theory they once considered plausible into a widely accepted narrative of natural origin.
He further alleged that during the early days of the pandemic, Fauci and other officials quietly relaxed federal rules on risky virus-modification research known as “gain-of-function,” and misled Congress about it. Makary said that despite internal warnings from scientists warning a lab leak was possible, the government suppressed the lab-origin hypothesis and promoted a different narrative.
Makary described the alleged cover-up as one of the greatest public-health betrayals in recent history, arguing that the public was denied full transparency about how the pandemic began. As of now, Fauci has not responded to these newest allegations.
