At a high-profile media summit, former Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched a fierce critique of mainstream press reporting on Donald Trump’s health, accusing outlets of diving into unverified claims while neglecting what he called “the greatest scandal of all time.”
During a sharp exchange with reporters he singled out The New York Times, Bessent challenged assertions that Trump is showing signs of physical or cognitive decline. He pointed to recent late-night calls and full-day schedules — including a lengthy Cabinet meeting — as evidence the president remains fully engaged.
Bessent contrasted what he described as exaggerated reporting on Trump’s energy with what he claims is a refusal by the media to question the health and performance of Joe Biden, arguing that the double standard undermines public trust.
Asked about concerns over Trump’s visible tiredness at times, Bessent dismissed them as manufactured. He called the media narratives “false stories” and said the focus on optics rather than facts has become “a cover-up.”
The confrontation exposed deep frustrations among Trump supporters with how the news media handles coverage of high-level officials. As Bessent warned, many believe the real scandal isn’t age or fatigue — it’s selective scrutiny.
