Retired lighting-director Thomas Markle, aged 81, underwent a life-saving surgical procedure on December 3 in a Philippine hospital, during which doctors amputated his left leg below the knee after a severe blood clot cut off circulation. According to his son, the limb turned blue and then black in hours — prompting doctors to declare: “It was either that or he dies.”
Thomas was rushed by ambulance from a smaller local hospital to a larger facility where a three-hour operation removed the clot and the lower portion of his leg. He was then placed in intensive care, where physicians say the next few days are critical due to risk of infection. Additional treatment, including another operation to clear a clot reportedly located higher in his thigh, is being considered.
The medical emergency comes amid a history of serious conditions for Thomas, who previously suffered two heart attacks and a stroke. His son described the surgery as a “life or death” situation and appealed for public support and compassion. Family members also expressed hope Thomas will recover, though they acknowledged the amputation marks a major turning point in his long health battle.
At this time, there is no public indication that his famous daughter — Meghan Markle — has visited or commented publicly. The former royal remains estranged from her father since around the time of her 2018 wedding.
