House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson acknowledged that he chose his words poorly when describing a recent shooting incident involving a member of the D.C. National Guard. Initially, Thompson referred to the event as an “unfortunate accident,” language that drew criticism from colleagues and the public for minimizing the seriousness of the shooting.

In subsequent comments, Thompson clarified his intent, emphasizing that he did not mean to diminish the gravity of the situation. He stressed that the incident is under active review and that any loss of life or injury involving military personnel deserves full transparency and accountability.

Thompson’s updated remarks came as lawmakers sought more information about the circumstances of the shooting and the sequence of events that led to it. He reiterated his commitment to conducting thorough oversight and ensuring that all facts are fully examined.

The clarification has drawn attention on Capitol Hill, where both parties have called for clear communication and accountability in handling incidents that affect service members and public safety. Thompson’s adjustment underscores the sensitivity surrounding how leaders describe violent events, especially involving uniformed personnel.
