A suspected shoplifter in Canton, Ohio, aimed a handgun at a responding police officer at extremely close range, but the weapon did not fire, according to law enforcement officials and released body-worn camera footage.
The incident began when officers were called to a Walmart after reports of a theft in progress. Upon arrival, the suspect brandished a firearm and pointed it directly at an officer. Body camera video shows the suspect attempting to fire the weapon, which malfunctioned and did not discharge.
Police then moved in quickly, subduing and taking the suspect into custody without shots being fired by officers. No injuries were reported in the encounter, and the suspect was charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and weapons violations.
Authorities praised the responding officers for their composure and effective response under dangerous circumstances. The footage and subsequent actions underscore the risks faced by law enforcement personnel during routine calls that can escalate without warning.
The investigation into the incident remains active, and prosecutors are preparing charges as part of the case. Police continue to review all available evidence, including surveillance and body camera recordings, as they work with local prosecutors.
