Supporters who gathered for Zohran Mamdani’s inauguration day block party outside New York City Hall reported widespread frustration after arriving to find no food vendors, no portable bathrooms, and limited warm shelter despite freezing conditions.
The event, promoted as the “Inauguration for a New Era Block Party,” drew an estimated crowd of about 10,000 people. Many attendees said they were kept in barricaded viewing areas and watched the program on large screens, while a smaller group of invited guests had seating and more comfortable access inside the City Hall outdoor plaza.
Organizers had posted notices online stating that food and restrooms would not be provided, citing safety considerations. Even with the warning, some attendees said the lack of basic amenities, long entry lines, confusing directions from security, and the need to go back through screening if leaving to find food contributed to a chaotic experience.
The program itself started more than 30 minutes later than scheduled and featured prominent progressive figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders. Despite the logistical setbacks, several supporters framed the day as a historic moment and said they remained hopeful about Mamdani’s leadership.
