The Trump administration sharply criticized Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass after she publicly called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to leave the city, escalating tensions between the White House and local leadership over federal immigration enforcement.

Administration officials defended ICE’s presence in Los Angeles, arguing that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility and cannot be blocked by city officials. They stressed that federal agents are authorized to operate anywhere in the country and accused the mayor of undermining lawful enforcement efforts.

Mayor Bass maintained that ICE operations damage trust between immigrant communities and local authorities, asserting that her position is rooted in public safety concerns. She has continued to oppose large-scale immigration actions within city limits.

The clash reflects broader national divisions over immigration policy, sanctuary city practices, and the limits of local authority when it comes to federal law enforcement, with both sides standing firm on their positions.
