A decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran was fatally shot at his home in Columbia, Missouri, during what began as a planned Facebook Marketplace transaction that quickly turned into a deadly encounter.

Officials say 42-year-old Michael Ryan Burke arranged to sell a cellphone at his residence when the meeting abruptly escalated into violence. Despite being critically wounded, Burke called 911 to report the incident and describe his attackers, and then sent a final text message to his mother and sister telling them he loved them in his last moments.

Burke was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Friends and family described him as a selfless and courageous individual who had served his country with distinction. After his military service, Burke had been involved in security work abroad and took part in volunteer and missionary efforts.

In the days following the shooting, law enforcement arrested three 18-year-old suspects and one male juvenile in connection with the killing. All face charges including second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and burglary, with additional weapons-related counts against two of the individuals. The three adult suspects are being held without bond, and the juvenile is in custody under juvenile supervision.

The tragedy highlights growing concerns over safety risks tied to in-person meetups arranged online and has led community members to reflect on the devastating loss of a veteran who tried to help others even in his final moments.
