A leading Democrat in the Senate has admitted that Vice President Biden “probably” does not have the votes to ram through gun control legislation during the current lame-duck session.

Democratic Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy said that it’s “probably not” the case that President Joe Biden has the 60 votes he needs to approve gun regulation in the lame-duck session of Congress.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Murphy shattered Biden’s hopes for passing an assault weapons ban. Murphy, on the other hand, lauded the comprehensive gun measure approved earlier this year, saying that the elimination of mass shootings will result from the prohibition of assault weapons.

Murphy expressed his satisfaction with President Biden’s plan to have the Senate vote on an assault weapons prohibition. The bill has already been approved in the House. The Senate has it now on their desk. Does it currently have 60 votes in the Senate? This is most likely not the case. In any case, let’s see if we can get that number as near to 60 as we can. If we don’t have the votes, we’ll discuss it with Senator Schumer and try again next year, perhaps with an extra senator.

President Biden is correct,” Murphy went on. There would be fewer mass shootings in the United States if an assault weapons prohibition was enacted. The number of assault rifles already in circulation is in the tens of thousands. In this context, no one is discussing disarming people. We’re only discussing putting a halt to further sales.

But “if you look at some of the most high-profile mass shootings in a previous couple of years,” he said, “many of those mass shooters acquired the weapon only days before carrying out the crime.” So, “I think a lot of mass shootings would have been averted if such guns were no longer publicly available, only in the custody of people who had acquired them earlier.”

After 11 people were killed in two recent mass shootings, Vice President Joe Biden informed reporters on Thursday that he will be advocating for a ban on assault weapons.

Biden has stated, “I’m sick and weary of these shootings.” “Tougher gun control measures are needed.”

The vice president later stated his intention to push through gun control legislation during the lame-duck session.

Biden said, “I’m going to try.” For my part, I plan to work toward eliminating assault weapons.

Inquiring once again, “during the lame duck?” the reporter pressed on.

I’ll do it as soon as I get in and start counting the votes, but I’ll make my decision at that time.
