Even if Trump is permitted back onto Facebook and Instagram, he may choose to remain on Truth Social.
On Sunday, it was reported that Facebook Inc., the company’s parent, will announce a decision on whether or not to allow former President Donald Trump’s account to be restored.
The Financial Times said that Meta had extended the date for announcing whether Trump would restore access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts until later in January. In the wake of his followers storming the U.S. Capitol in January 2021, Trump has been banned from both platforms.
According to FT, Nick Clegg, head of global affairs at Meta, has assembled a panel to weigh in on whether or not to restore Trump. In October, Clegg mentioned that lifting the prohibition was a top priority for the corporation.
We feel that any private corporation, which is true regardless of one’s personal beliefs about Donald Trump, should walk with great deliberation when aiming to stifle political voices, he stated at the time.
Fox News Digital has requested feedback from Facebook but has yet to receive an immediate response.
The Facebook board decided in June 2021 to uphold a two-year ban on Trump’s account, with a possible expiry date of January 7, 2023.
Trump could use his Twitter account again in November, thanks to entrepreneur Elon Musk’s ownership of the service. Despite having a far smaller following than on Twitter, Trump has yet to use his account, saying he plans to stick strictly to his Truth Social platform.
Trump told Fox News last year, months before Elon’s takeover of the business, “I am not going on Twitter. I am going to remain on TRUTH.” Elon is a fine man, and I hope he buys Twitter, but I’m remaining put on TRUTH for the foreseeable future.
Musk has released many documents from within Twitter, revealing conversations about banning Trump during the Capitol Hill protests.
In the neighborhood, 34 million people follow Trump on Facebook. He has 23.3 million people that follow him on Instagram. On January 6, 2021, he still needed to update his Facebook status again.
