As the results come in, Rick Caruso and Karen Bass are vying for first place.
The race for mayor of Los Angeles between Republican businessman Rick Caruso and Democrat Congresswoman Karen Bass is still too close to call as election results begin to filter in.
Caruso and Bass both received roughly 50% of the vote, according to early figures, although just a small number of mail-in votes were tabulated.
Bass, a liberal Democratic congressman, has a chance to become the first Black woman to hold the office. Caruso, a billionaire, and current Democrat but a former Republican, would constitute a rightward political shift for the liberal city of almost 4 million people.
In a rally with supporters on election night, Bass voiced confidence that “we will win” despite the fact that it would take many days to total the votes.
“We’re all here together for the same reason. This is a very positive trend, “He added.
A number of serious issues are present in the city around the time of the election, including the continuing homelessness crisis, corruption investigations, and general fear of crime, which has encompassed anything from daytime robberies on city sidewalks to smash-and-grab thefts at expensive stores.
Bass is backed by President Biden and the Democratic establishment and has promised to use her network-building skills to assist a community in need.
Caruso is running on a platform of a quick change of direction and claims that Bass and other seasoned politicians are part of the problem that has led to countless disasters in Los Angeles. He promises to make the police force stronger in order to handle the rising crime rate. Additionally, he promises to get homeless camps off the streets as quickly as possible.
The winner would succeed Democrat Eric Garcetti, whose appointment as the country’s next ambassador to India is believed to have been thwarted by the Senate due to allegations of sexual misconduct against a former key Garcetti ally. Garcetti would put an end to two unequal terms.
