ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman has issued a public apology after describing text messages from Tyler Robinson—alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk—to his partner as “very touching” during a press conference.
Gutman said his intent was to highlight the stark contrast between the violent act and Robinson’s personal messages, which expressed affection and concern toward his partner. He admitted, however, that his wording did not clearly convey that distinction.
In his apology, Gutman condemned the killing of Charlie Kirk and expressed regret for any confusion or hurt caused by his earlier comments. He emphasized his respect for Kirk’s family and underscored that the empathy shown in the texts does not lessen accountability for the crime.
