During the National Book Awards ceremony, actor LeVar Burton, known for his role as the host of the children’s show “Reading Rainbow,” made a notable comment about the parental rights group Moms for Liberty. In his opening speech, Burton humorously asked if any members of the group were present, and then jocularly remarked that no physical confrontation would be necessary as they weren’t in attendance.

This comment led to a range of responses on social media. The national chapter of Moms for Liberty took to social media to express their disapproval, framing Burton’s comment as a threat of physical violence against women, and questioning his motivations.

Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice expressed disappointment in Burton’s remark, emphasizing the group’s commitment to advocating for children’s innocence and questioning the need for physical confrontation to defend certain agendas.

Moms for Liberty has been at the forefront of challenging the presence of sexually explicit books in school libraries, asserting that their goal is not to ban books, but to protect children. The group, with chapters across the United States, often participates in debates over the content of school library books.

LeVar Burton, a passionate advocate for literacy, has spoken out against the removal of books from libraries, seeing it as a form of censorship. He served as the honorary chair of the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week, where he highlighted the importance of books in fostering understanding and success, and criticized efforts to censor books.

The National Book Awards, anticipating possibly “political” or “controversial” remarks from honorees, emphasized their tradition of welcoming diverse expressions while ensuring a safe environment for attendees.

Additionally, the ceremony featured a collective statement from over a dozen writers calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. They expressed opposition to the bombardment of Gaza, called for addressing humanitarian needs, especially of children, and opposed antisemitism, anti-Palestinian sentiment, and Islamophobia, advocating for the human dignity of all involved.
