A potential disaster was narrowly avoided at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) when a jet carrying the Gonzaga University basketball team came alarmingly close to colliding with a Delta Air Lines aircraft on the runway. The incident unfolded during what officials have described as a critical lapse in coordination.

According to airport authorities, the near-miss occurred as the Gonzaga charter plane was taxiing for takeoff while the Delta flight was maneuvering for a landing. Air traffic controllers intervened just in time to prevent the two planes from coming dangerously close, averting what could have been a catastrophic accident.

A video capturing the event shows the two aircraft in proximity, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Witnesses at the airport described the tense moments as the planes’ paths appeared to converge. “It was a heart-stopping scene,” one bystander said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident to determine how the planes ended up in such close quarters. Preliminary reports suggest a possible miscommunication between air traffic control and the pilots involved.

Neither plane sustained damage, and no injuries were reported. Both the basketball team and the passengers on the Delta flight proceeded with their journeys after the situation was resolved.

This near-collision has sparked renewed discussions about aviation safety and the importance of stringent coordination protocols at busy airports like LAX. Experts have called for thorough reviews of the systems in place to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.

The Gonzaga basketball team later issued a statement thanking the pilots and air traffic controllers for their swift actions, expressing relief that everyone was safe. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the critical role of communication in ensuring the safety of air travel.
