Renowned actor and writer Kirk Cameron, accompanied by his publisher Brave Books and special guest Riley Gaines, received unexpected news ahead of their planned event at the Madison Public Library in Huntsville, Alabama. The library system released a statement citing concerns about logistics and safety, leading to the cancellation of the book reading event.
The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library System revealed that the Moms for Liberty organization had initially reported only 20 attendees, but that number unexpectedly ballooned to over 300, far exceeding the library’s capacity. Despite attempts to find a solution, including consulting the Madison City Police and Fire Marshal, the library concluded that an alternate location would be necessary.
The library emphasized that it welcomes all individuals and groups, but it must prioritize the safety of its users and staff. The event organizers failed to apply for a necessary event permit in advance, and the short notice made it impossible for the city’s resources to support an event of this scale.
In response to the cancellation notice, Cameron’s legal team from the First Liberty Institute wrote a letter to the library system, accusing them of violating civil rights through religious viewpoint and content discrimination. They demanded a response confirming the event’s rescheduling by a specific deadline, threatening legal action if their request is denied.
Undeterred, Cameron and Brave Books remain committed to their planned events and library stops. They expressed gratitude for the overwhelming interest from families across the country. Cameron questioned why libraries wouldn’t embrace such a family-friendly movement and capitalize on the opportunity to engage with parents and children.
Despite the setback in Huntsville, the “See You at the Library” event continues to gain momentum, with over 300 libraries from 46 states participating. Cameron and his team remain hopeful that libraries will recognize the value of fostering family-friendly experiences and celebrate the enthusiasm of their young visitors.
